The London based firm Grimshaw Architects has won the commission to design Miami's new $275 million Science Museum in Bicentennial Park. The Coral Gables firm Rodriguez and Quiroga won the spot for "executive architect," which will oversee construction documentation for permitting and building.
The 200,000 square foot Science Museum (with 25,000 square feet dedicated to the Historical Museum of Southern Florida) will be built next to the proposed $208 million Miami Art Museum, which will be designed by the equally revered Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre De Meuron.
The Science Museum is scheduled to open 2011, a year after the opening of the Art Museum. According to the Miami Herald, the Science Museum will "include an aquarium spanning three floors, with mangroves and seagrass at the top, a tropical coral reef in the middle, and large sea creatures such as sharks and rays on the ground level...rooftop observatory, a 300-seat planetarium and a wildlife center, all on the roof."
When these museums kick in and join the Carnival Center and the American Airlines Arena, who wouldn't want to live downtown? Talk about an urban cultural mecca, these amenities will propel Miami into the top ten cities in the world and cement its claim to being the "Gateway to the Americas."

Doesn't it bother anyone that the firm of Rodriguez & Quiroga selected to be executive architect for the new Miami Science Museum was the local executive architect for the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts --- that was $200M over budget and that missed its target open date by years.
And by the way Rodriguez told the selection committee they "resigned" from the project over differences related to scope and fees. They resigned - Yeah Right ! They were asked off the job. So to clarify we have now awarded the firm that could not complete their previous and ONLY executive architecture project a new $275M project to ruin.
Disgraceful -- the other firm LEO A DALY was obviously more qualified, 12 or so projects as executive architect, and believe it or not their projects were on time and on budget and apparently they actually returned money to their projects --- but who does the Miami Science Museum selection committee select, the architect who previously failed at the role of executive architect ! Makes no sense !
I for one am tired of having our civic projects be such disasters -- we are well on our way to another disaster with the Miami Science Museum if Rodriguez and Quiroga is the local architect -- maybe they will decide to quit this one too.
Hey, it bothers Me, mortal. I must have been out of town when Rodrigurez and Quiroga got the heave ho on the Carnival project. This does not bode well but it does sound like the typical Miami thing to do. You people are really trying my patience down there in Miami. You've got so much going for you and you've got so much going against you. At least you're not boring.
Bicentennial Park is only 27-29 acres. We should keep it green or at least only allow one museum to build on that priceless waterfront site.
And are not we taxed enough? Who can afford another $500 Mil disaster?
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF Rodrigurez and Quiroga ARE THE ONES TO HAVE DEFINITELY WON THIS POSITION WITHIN THE PROJECT FOR THE SCIENCE MUSEUM. DO YOU KNOW WHO WILL BE THE EXECUTIVE FIRM TO WORK ON THE MIAMI ART MUSEUM? DO YOU KNOW WHEN WORK ON THESE WILL BEGIN ON THE PART OF THE MIAMI BASED EXECUTIVE FIRMS?
the miami science museum is one of the worse museums i have ever been to and should not be rewarded for their horrible work with a multi-million dollar facility that will be ruined in a couple years...
